Happy The Man, Live at the Fairfax Theater, Fairfax,VA.
Sample track: I Carve The Chariot On The Carousel
Recorded live 11/07/1975. This concert was one of our very early dates and appears to be a board recording. The quality is pretty good, and as is often the case in these early concerts, the arrangements are a little different from what would eventually end up on vinyl. I particularly like the version of I Carve The Chariot On The Carousel for Kit's great flute playing and a sort of spooky ambient intro to the piece.
Happy The Man, Live in Williamsburg, VA.
Sample Track: Hidden Moods
Recorded live at the Rainbow's End, 4/24/1977. This concert was one of our college "tour" dates and has a few interesting arrangements of songs not commonly heard. There is an improv at the end titled "Pocket That Per Diem" which was a jam we named a different name each time we did it. There is substantial hiss on the tape which I believe was recorded to cassette. I tried to clean it up, but after several tries felt too much high end was lost in the "fix" so reverted to the original, noisy material. It is what it is!

Sample Track: Contemporary Insanity
Recorded live at the State Theater, June 8, 2000. This concert was our first performance after our reunion in 2000. Frank Wyatt, Stan Whitaker, Rick Kennell, David Rosenthal and Ron Riddle are in the lineup. There are several member solos and the arrangements to some of the songs are unique to this performance. The concert is quite long so I am breaking the Backstage download into two parts.

Happy The Man, Il Quinto Mare Era
Sample Track: Il Quinto Mare
Recorded live at Sirius/XM Radio's performance theater in Washington D.C., June 22, 2005. This concert performed in the performance theater at XM Radio in Washington featured the last Happy The Man lineup. Frank Wyatt, Stan Whitaker, Rick Kennell, David Rosenthal and Joe Bergamini. The band performed in headphones to a very small audience while the performance was broadcast live to the nation via satellite. The audio quality is really great in this recording as you would expect from a state of the art recording studio like XM.
Happy the Man live at University of Maryland Baltimore Campus 4/3/1975
Sample Track: Excerpt from "Death's Crown"
I believe this concert, recorded on campus at UMBC, Catonsville, Maryland is a transfer from a cassette tape. It is a room recording and there are many audio clips that I could not remove. I did remaster the tape to add some much needed low end, but the overall quality is mediocre at best. It does, however, contain a very interesting set list and a truncated version of Death's Crown, somewhere in the seventeen to eighteen minute range, that I have not found on any other tapes. I have put this short version of Death's Crown up for streaming or download in the free downloads section of the website, and of course the entire concert is here for Backstage members to download. Again, the audio quality is somewhat degraded, but it is from a forty year old cassette after all!
